Finding Relief for People with Crazy Busy Jobs and Lives
You’ll never get it all done. When you think about that statement from the point of view of feeling overwhelmed or overworked or pressured by other people to get things done, you can feel exceedingly stressed out. And when you think that you’re going to reach the Finish Line as if the agony is FINALLY over, the truth is you never reach the end. After months or years of affliction, this pathway of taking on more of what you think you “should” do, rushing to find completion, eventually takes its toll on your physical body and mental attitude.
What if you could think that every day is an opportunity to unleash greater potential, sharpen your expertise, or use your imagination in miraculous ways?
What if you knew that the honest effort and personal excellence you put forth to achieve your goals each day was enough? What if you could set your goal to give it your all in a specific period of time each day? Imagine you could just stop on time today without fear of everything falling apart.
What if you understood that when you work harder you still never seem to catch up, yet interestingly when you rest you thrive?
Isn’t the reason you’re alive is to enjoy the journey?
Life is like this…the more you do the more there is to do. If you keep doing more, and keep having more to do, are you then becoming more skilled to do more in less time? Are you taking healthy breaks to restore your energy? For most people they are working more and more hours, not taking breaks, not eating healthy, and sleeping fewer hours to unsuccessfully satisfy the increasing workload and busy life.
The future is set and the workplace is certain to have less people to do the retired baby boomers work. It will be impossible to maintain the workload, especially with unhealthy, exhausted people. So what’s the solution?
Taking time to rest, to explore creating more efficient systems, to be more innovative and eliminate the habitual processes that bring minimal return of profit, is where our energy is needed.
Additionally retention of employees, customers, clients and partnerships will be even more crucial in the years to come. So while we’re at it, let’s get back to appreciating people, celebrating success and special occasions, and providing a workplace that values insightful contributions for improvement.
As I envision the future I can clearly see that there will be people in places of power that will go in two different directions. One will not care for other people and be very self-centered, profit-driven, and full of greed. These people will end up creating an environment where people will fix their gaze on troubles and their undesirable circumstances will cause confusion and chaos. They will daydream through their days feeling delirious about their decisions. As a result of their feeling overwhelmed they will cause their inner programming that is increasingly problematic to be put on automatic pilot. Thus repeating the same patterns of problems and the problems will undeniably increase more and more.
And then there will be those forerunners that are very conscientious about people’s needs. They are genuine leaders. The people in their life; spouses, children, employees, friends, co-works, partners, etc. will want to give more and work smarter because they feel appreciated, are less pressured, and are more empowered to develop, strengthen and utilize their natural exceptional abilities to achieve peak performance.
These leaders in the business place realize the importance of encouraging employees to take breaks; time out, to rest, and to tend to a healthy mind, body and spirit.
Breaks help us relax, daydream, and re-evaluate our situations to produce more positive and productive outcomes.
Our brains have two modes: the “focused mode,” which we use when we’re working on projects, and completing tasks that demand our concentration, and we have a “diffuse mode,” which is our more relaxed, free flowing and insightful mode when we’re not thinking so hard. You might think that the focused mode is the one to optimize for more productivity, but diffuse mode plays a big role, too.
Years ago our brains were thought to go idle when we daydreamed. Yet numerous studies have shown that activity in many brain regions increase when our minds wander. Some studies have shown that the mind solves its most complex problems while daydreaming or sleeping. You may have experienced solving a problem while running on the treadmill or walking up in the middle of the night and writing down the idea that seemed to come out of the blue. Brilliant insight that seems to flow into the relaxed mind is often the product of diffuse mode thinking. That’s because relaxation allows the brain to “open up” and return valuable insights. When you’re focusing, your brain is in a heightened state; a beta brainwave state that actually blocks your access to the creative and insightful aspect of your deeper mind.
When you relax and diffuse the stressors and a brain draining data, you are much more able to solve a very difficult, new problem. Not only that, the down time enables us to reevaluate our goals. Harvard Business Review examines another prime benefit of breaks: they allow us to take a step back and make sure we’re accomplishing the right things in the right way.
Without a doubt, people who worry less, put in their time to work hard yet have healthy limits, and people who promote the well-being of others will surely prosper well in the days ahead. Understandably so!
