Two Top Tips to Quickly Overcome Negative Thinking


Even though I’m a life coach and motivational speaker, I still find it’s natural to fall prey to negative thinking. Having negative thoughts rush through your mind like a horror movie can only bring you pain, stress, and ill health.  It’s something that I’ve experienced many times throughout my life.  Thank God I’ve learned how to get out of that rut as quickly as possible.

Negative thoughts drain you of precious energy and keep you from enjoying the present moment. The more you focus on your negative thoughts, the stronger they become. It’s like the image of a flooding river; the more it rains the body of water gets bigger, and greater is its power to rush faster and overflow. Before you know it, an entire village is washed away. This could be our future, our hopes and dreams.

That’s what one small negative thought can turn into: a huge, flooding river of destruction. On the contrary, a small positive thought can have the same effect allowing your life to flow in a more beneficial way.  One day you may want to float peacefully along and enjoy the sights, and another you may want to step it up a notch and take a white river rafting ride.  And all the while you are remaining upbeat, confident, and in control of shaping the positive focus that leads your pathway. Is this possible?  Absolutely!!!

The funny thing about our mind is that the strongest feeling creates our beliefs and shape generalized statements that guide our emotions throughout the day (I’m struggling with this job therefore…I’m not good enough, I can’t do it, I’ll never be competent, I’m (tired, lazy, anxious, overwhelmed, worried, fearful) ALL the time).  We create this inner language automatically and often without even recognizing the flood we’re causing in our mind. 

Two Top Tips for Quickly Shaping a Positive Mindset

1.  One tip I highly recommend to my coaching clients is to journal at night, or make a mental note to reflect on what went well that day. Then when you go to sleep you will have your thoughts follow the tone of the feelings those thoughts produced.

The other day I had a client who was struggling with negative thinking.  It appeared that she didn’t feel adequate.  She felt that no matter what she did, a constant state of anxiety was present.  Before coming to my office I asked her to simply jot down what she was grateful for.  Whatever came to mind write it in a spiral notebook.  She brought her journal to the 1st session.  During the session it was brought forth that she didn’t feel loved or was not sure she could even recognize what love was or if she loved anything. After our session she recognized that she loved many things.  I had her write the words “I LOVE” at the top of the page in her journal.  She immediately changed her statements of gratitude to start with I love.

Instead of stating, “I am grateful for the sun today and sitting outside for lunch,” she wrote “I LOVE the sun shining on my face while sitting outside for lunch.”

After that one “shift”, she said it changed the entire energy level in her body. She instantly felt happy, upbeat, and lighter.

2.  Another tip that works to shape your thoughts and feelings on demand is using audios.  When you wake up and feel uncomfortable, nervous about what’s ahead or unhappy about something that happened the day before, it sets the tone of the day.  It is most useful to “shift” that negative energy to a more uplifting focus. To do that you simply have tools in your tool chest. Audios work great!
