Are You Finishing 2010 STRONG?

“It must be borne in mind that the tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It isn’t a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, but it is a disaster to have no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is a sin.”

~ Benjamin E. Mayes~

Personally I live fully today with the future in mind.  Each day I desire to finish strong, doing my ultimate best.  Not always meeting my expectations, however I’ve learned that is to be expected.  Life happens.

Typically I have learned that two words describe whether you will achieve your goals or not, Persistence or Procrastination.  This is a superb time to identify those goals where persistence paid off and procrastination caused them to lay dormant or incomplete.  Often there are a lot of incomplete activities still in the “to do” pile.  Lots of starts and not nearly enough follow-throughs is what many of my clients struggle with.  Why?  People are energized and motivated in the beginning, yet for most individuals it takes focus, support and determination to finish what you start.

Why do we procrastinate?  It is safer in our mind to think that not having to do something we may struggle with-avoiding the feeling of insecurity and incompetence, is better than actually doing it.  AND avoidance is a diversion to making mistakes.  If we never make a mistake, are we not viewed as competent?

The truth is that competence and confidence sprouts forth from the seed of action that is full of mistakes.

When you commit to constant improvement, everything you do is the best thing you’ve ever done. –line from a Toyota Camry TV commercial

Get comfortable as soon as you can with the uncomfortable thought, “Constant improvement requires making mistakes.”  For it is in the experience and lesson learned, if in fact you choose to find them, that enables you to grow.  Even if, all you’ve learned is to never do something again or that every time you do an act it leads to a negative outcome, you’ve learned that everytime you take that same action you get the same result.  Improvement then means, doing something different to get a different and better result.  Super achievers are the best failures I know.

What I notice when I encourage my clients to reflect on the past year, which the close of the year allows one to do in preparation of the conception of New Years goals, is that typically a person expected too much and imagined they could perform at superhuman capacity.  So bottom line, to close out the year with a bang, give it all you’ve got in spite of unmet goals.

Reflection on reality allows us to reassess what happened in the past year and identity the valuable lessons learned.  What many people tragically miss, is counting thier blessings and being grateful for what you DID DO! Then with this higher energy and motivating mindset, you can move toward the future with fresh faith and wisdom.  Otherwise, focusing on what you lack or did not achieve will typically result in being no more than a repeater.

Change is inevitable, whether you are in control of it or your circumstances are controlling you.  Those who embrace change, learn from mistakes and successes, and are willing to risk journeying into the unknown with courage, certainly will be met with personal growth, valuable experience and ideally live a life full of passionate purpose and rich relationships.

I once read about how the people in the olden days used to have so much more time to reflect when they traveled to by horse and buggy.  We have lost that ability and need to schedule reflection time like everything else.  If it’s not on the calendar, it easily gets forgotten.

So to end the year STRONG, REFLECT.  You’ll be glad you did.
