Stress does not have to control your life!!! by Lori Bestler

Have you ever been so stressed out that you have a hard time sleeping at night, or feel that heart racing non stop as if you’re going to lose your composure at any moment?

Know that you’re not alone.  Numerous people have fallen short of knowing how to deal with stress effectively.

Just the other day I had to call a hypnosis client to reschedule their appointment.  She told me that she was having a terrible day, already taking two shots for her migraine, using the essential oils I suggested for headaches, listening to the audio I gave her and practicing the breathing techniques I taught her.  Nothing was working.  I then asked her what she was thinking about when she was breathing and listening to my tapes.  Her reply “I thought that I really didn’t have time to relax, that I should be working on all the things that needed to be done instead.”

 Dancing in the Rain

Now be aware that if you tell yourself that what you’re doing is wrong, then your body will follow that command and behave in a way to prove that thought right.  I told my hypnosis client that she was fighting against herself.  She needed to decide what was best, to work or to rest.  Then be ok with your decision. I took 15 minutes over the phone and did a hypnosis session for stress reduction. Afterward her headache and neck pain were completely gone.  Sometimes it takes a few sessions and lessons to learn how to do this effectively.

Yet the lesson for my client was clear; when you decide to relax and believe that after you clear your head you will be so much more productive, you will easily let go of all the worry for a time.  And you just might find that after you’ve taken a short break, a solution to a problem pops into your head or after you’re relaxed things do not bother you nearly as much.  So be sure that when you’re practicing these six steps your mind is in agreement that this is what you really want to do.

It’s extremely easy to get overwhelmed and stressed out at work and in life. Approaching deadlines, difficult people, huge “to do” list, unexpected problems, and technical trauma can all can lead to mental fatigue and frustration.  Before you blow up being pushed past your breaking point and bring harm to your health, tap into the stress reduction tools to reduce tension and their affect on your body and personal or professional success.

Just as easy as it is to ramp up your stress level in the office, on a committee, or just with life’s challenges, it can be easy to release that steam and restore calm and order to your life — simply shut down the “have to” worries and unwind for a little while. In short, relax, release and restore so you can clear your head from the brain draining clutter and return to your day with revived energy and improved attitude.

Follow these six steps to instantly reduce stress and feel  renewed, recharged, and refreshed

1. Take a short break.

When you feel overwhelmed, stop what you’re doing, take three deep breaths, and do self-hypnosis by bringing a positive thought into your mind to temporarily leave your troubles behind. Remove yourself from the situation and take your thoughts to another place and time where you felt completely safe and comfortable. Whether it’s remembering a time on vacation, or when you achieved a big goal and felt great, or simply creating your own happy place to escape for awhile, simply taking a few minutes to remove yourself from a stressful situation can work wonders for your mental health.

2. Go for a stroll.

Get up from your seat and change your environment. Even if for just a few minutes, walking away from a stressful situation can help you relax and clear your head, so take a hike. Literally! Short walks can help lower your blood pressure and will get your blood flowing to provide you with the boost of energy you need to get through your day. Even if you’re in a heated discussion, just excuse yourself and say you have to go to the restroom. Take 10 minutes to regroup. It’s shocking sometimes how much peace of mind you can find when you take a mental break.

3. Get outside.

If possible get in the sun and walk around the building or through the parking lot. The fresh air and vitamin D from the sun will do wonders for your mood and psyche. It can put some pep in your step and a smile on your face so you feel much more uplifted to finish the work ahead of you.

4. Stretch and loosen up.

If you’re like many office workers who sit at a desk all day, it’s so important to get up and stretch your legs periodically. Get that circulation in your body moving. The inactivity of sitting behind a desk for eight or more hours at a time is frowned upon by medical professionals. A simple stretch can ease your physical and mental stress in a few short minutes.

5. Practice deep breathing.

Most people breathe badly. Their breaths are shallow and the air flow is not deep and slow. It is best to put your hand on your belly and feel it rise up when you inhale; counting 1 to 5 slowly, and fall when you exhale; counting down 5 to 1 slowly. I’ll even say the words “Relax” in my mind, when I inhale and “Release” as I exhale to switch it up a bit. You cannot think about all your problems when you replace thoughts with numbers to calibrate the overwhelmed brain, or repeat calming words to bring peace to the body and brain.

6. Stop getting upset when someone says something you disagree with.

After attending a cooking class from a well known chief, I asked him about how certain healthy oils turn into an unhealthy oil when cooked at a high temperature. He flew off on a tangent like I had questioned his intelligence. I just thought it would be a good piece of information to share with the class, never expecting him to get angry at all. Its best to chalk different opinions up to perceptions, experience, education and interests. And a respectful opposing opinion is nothing more than two people agreeing to disagree. When we refuse to be offended and get angry, we just may learn something of value. Getting angry, especially when it happens often and stresses you out like it did this chief, can soon result in getting ill.

So when you’re stressed out and your breaking point is within sight, unplug yourself and unwind. Remove yourself from the situation (mentally or physically) and release that tension, for the sake of your health, happiness and your ability to peak perform.
